Robert J. Lynch, 80, NCHS coach, teacher

Robert J. Lynch of Stamford, a former New Canaan teacher and coach, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 6. He was 80, and the husband of Barbara Jensen Lynch.

Mr. Lynch was born on March 9, 1930 in Stamford, the son of the late William J. and Helen Finley Lynch.

He graduated from Stamford High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from New York University and a master’s degree from Fairfield University. He was employed as a teacher, coach and administrator in local public high schools, including New Canaan High School from 1970-75. During that period in New Canaan, as coach, he led the team to win one FCIAC and three state titles. He is ranked 10th in the state for highest career-winning percentage at .793 (45-11-2).

Mr. Lynch also coached at the collegiate level. He was a founding member of the FCIAC and the first chairman of the league’s football committee.

While he was a consultant for more than a decade to Champion International Corporation, Pitney Bowes World Headquarters, Nabisco Financial Center in Hamilton, as well as other Fortune 500 companies, he also served on the advisory board of Boys Life magazine. Mr. Lynch is a veteran of the United States Army infantry, having served in the Korean War as a first lieutenant.

Mr. Lynch was a past member of the Woodway Country Club in Darien, the Lago Mar Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the National Football Coaches Association and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his children, Kristina M. Spillane and her husband, John, and their children, Jack and Elizabeth, of Worcester, Mass.; William J. Lynch and his wife, Angenette, and their children, Avery and Will, of Stamford; and Robert E. Lynch of Hallandale Beach, Fla., and his fiance, Gillian Farrelly. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dr. William E. Lynch, and a nephew, Michael P. Lynch.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 10 at The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist Church, 279 Atlantic Street, Stamford, CT 06901. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien.
