It is with great sadness
that we inform you of the passing of our classmate, Thomas E. Berg, on September 23, 2015, from lung cancer and possible complications thereof. An obituary has been posted to the In Memoriam page.

There will be a "celebration of life" service which has been organized as more of a party than a religious service for Tom. His wife, Jennifer, has expressed that "appropriate attire would include (but not be limited to) New England Patriot gear, Hawaiian shirts, and flannel". The Berg family has also arranged for $99 rooms at the local Courtyard Marriott Shelton. They are now able to take reservations by calling the property reservation department at (203) 929-1500 and asking for the "Thomas Berg Memorial " group rate. The group room rate is available until Wednesday, September 30, at which time they will release any unsold rooms for sale to the general public.

(12/18/13) 40th CLASS REUNION - Pictures Posted
The bulk of the reunion weekend pictures, about 200, have been posted to the Reunion section of the website. There are a few more to come. Some have major lighting and grain issues to try to overcome and will take a bit longer to become “web ready”.

(12/12/13) 40th CLASS REUNION
We had a HUGELY successful reunion in October, and the Reunion Committee is to be commended and applauded for a fantastic job of organizing and getting everything to run so smoothly (at least as perceived by all in attendance). Thanks go to Gary O’Keeffe for leading the committee, Linda Cochran Sykes, Anne Gesualdi, Karin Lewis Cook, Chuck Cunningham, Mary Ann Ruggiero Gabriel, and Chris Cody, who, once again, opened his home to the class both Friday and Saturday nights for wonderful parties.

With such a great turnout, and a commitment for economy with the event expenses, there was a sizable amount of funds left over. The Committee was able to donate $1,000 to the New Canaan Food Pantry, and $2,400 to the New Canaan High School Scholarship Foundation in the name of the NCHS Class of 1973.

I think that I can speak for everyone who attended the reunion weekend events in saying that we can’t wait for the 45th Reunion in 2018!

(12/12/13) SAD NEWS
For many of you who attended the 40th Reunion in October, it was a great pleasure to see Rick White there along with us. Although Rick was not a member of our class, he was a good friend to many classmates. Unfortunately, Rick passed away just one week after the reunion. He will be greatly missed by many, but we are thankful that he could brighten our day for just a few hours once again before he left us.

(12/12/13) We have many enterprising classmates with businesses or projects to highlight. Check out:

Ann Franco McAndrew - owner of Backcountry Outfitters and Annie Bananie Ice Cream in Kent, CT. She’s received lots of great press lately for the business. Take a few minutes to see a recent news feature video from WFSB-TV interviewing Annie at her stores. Click Here for the video link (and be patient while they run a 30sec ad first). Definitely plan to stop in Kent this holiday season for some great shopping around town and head to Annie’s for some great gift ideas. She does custom gift baskets of CT-made candies and other treats that will please anyone on your list. And she’ll ship too so get in touch and place your orders!

Bruce Bertram - recently started Sakura Blade & Tool Sharpening in Danbury, CT. He sharpens a variety of knife blades, scissors and tool blades including chain saw and mower blades. His specialty is fine edged knives, and has the ability to sharpen using both machine and hand water stones. Contact him to get all of those dull knifes and tools brought back to top condition. And, he can also take his services “on the road” upon request as he did a few weeks back when Ann Franco McAndrew had him do sharpenings at her stores in Kent!

Theo Barnes Dierks - created another online shopping website. This one is called Mermaid’s View (for your dose of vitamin Sea). Check out the site at www.mermaidsview.com for some holiday gift ideas.

Pat Henry - is actively producing a new CD of kids songs for Philippine Relief efforts. You can check her website, www.patricialynnhenry.com, for updates and notice when the CD will be available for purchase.

(7/19/13) Congratulations AGAIN to Albert Bouchard for having his Bouchard Restaurant & Inn named to the 10 Best List of Newport Eateries by USA Today Travel! So, if you happen to be in the Newport, RI, vicinity, do stop by and find out for yourself how great it is to eat and/or stay at this award-winning establishment. Visit the Bouchard Restaurant & Inn website for information and reservations.

(7/19/13) Another of our classmates has made charity a priority. Richard Stillman has partnered with Coinstar® (of which he served as President from 8/99 to 5/05) to found the charity Change Making Change, an organization that supports a different children’s health and welfare organization each month by giving people, who go to count their change at the local Coinstar® machine, the option to donate all or part of their change to help children around the world. This 501(c)(3) non-profit operates on the belief that many people giving small amounts of money can do as much good as a few people giving a lot of money. Fantastically simple and a great way to get adults and children alike to put their loose coin, whatever the amount may be, to work helping make a difference. Of course, you don't have to go out and find a Coinstar® machine to donate. Visit the Change Making Change website, cmcfund.org, to read about the featured children’s charity of the month and make a direct donation.

All of the Travel/Lodging information has now been posted in the Reunion section of the website. If you are planning to attend the reunion from out-of-town, then check out the information that the Reunion Committee has put together for you and get your room booked as soon as you can. There are a few other NCHS reunions being held the same weekend, and “close proximity” rooms can be a bit difficult to come by. When our block of rooms is full, you may still be able to make reservations at the same hotels at the standard rates, but don’t wait too long.

Click on the Reunion menu option on the left and get signed up now by completing the online Sign Up form found under the Sign Up option from the Reunion page menu! The “Who’s Coming” page is up-to-date and will be updated as the sign-ups come in so be sure to check back from time-to-time to see who will be coming. And don’t forget to follow the class on our Facebook page as well. Follow the link from the main 40th Reunion page to Facebook. (5/20/13) Summer is upon us and it brings out those classmates who like to challenge themselves physically by heading out on the road to participate in a walk, run or ride for worthwhile charitable organizations. If you can, help out these classmates by supporting their walk, run and/or ride:

Pat Sullivan - Harbor 2013 Walk & Run benefiting Tufts Medical Center - Sunday, June 9, 2013
Pat hopes to try and walk the entire 6 miles to help those who saved his life save a lot more lives.
His donor page is: Pat Sullivan Harbor Walk & Run.

Sam Duncan - Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) Bike-A-Thon supporting cancer research - August 3 and 4, 2013
This will be Sam’s sixth year riding the 190 mile, two day route from Sturbridge to Provincetown.
His rider donation page is: Sam Duncan PMC Rider Page or you can send him a check if you prefer not to give online. The check should be made out to Pan Mass Challenge and sent to his home address (found in our NCHS73 website directory).

(5/20/13) Karen Murphy finishes her time with the touring company production of Mary Poppins on June 2 in Anchorage, Alaska, and then heads immediately back home to rehearse for the summer production of The Sound of Music at the Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford, NY. The show is set to run June 13 through August 11. It’s only about a 30-40 minute drive from New Canaan, so hopefully many of you will be able to attend and take some time to visit with Karen before or after the show. For more information and tickets, visit the Westchester Broadway Theatre website.

For those of you have not seen Karen perform, a few vocal numbers from her recent March 2013, participation in an evening of music in NYC featuring the work of Jule Styne is available on her NCHS73 directory picture page. Give a listen or watch a video of two of her numbers from that evening. A picture of her in costume as “the bird woman” from the Mary Poppins production is also posted there.

AND, of course, don’t forget that if you’re in New York City and have not yet seen her show, be sure to catch Cathy Russell in Perfect Crime at the Snapple Theatre Center on Broadway which she manages when she’s not on stage or teaching. An amazing multi-tasker!

(3/26/13) Congratulations to Albert Bouchard on receiving multiple awards for his Bouchard Restaurant & Inn! Open Table reviewers have voted it as a top 100 restaurant in the nation two years in a row, and Trip Advisor ranks it at #1 for five years in a row! And from Vanity Fair, chef and restauranter, David Burke, named Bouchard Restaurant as one of his two favorite places to indulge in a delicious meal when “getting away from it all” in Newport. Totally impressive to say the least. And, they’re in the process of remodeling some of the rooms to include modern upgrades that will give guests a truly “boutique” stay.

And Albert and Sarah aren’t stopping there; they have plans to open a new restaurant right next door called The Revolving Door. The concept will be to have a prix fix menu item at all times, but the rest will change every few weeks when a special local, regional, or national “guest chef” comes in to feature their own menu. Fantastic! They hope to have everything ready for a summer opening. If you have a favorite local chef who might like a “working vacation” in Newport, RI, have them contact Albert. Click Here to visit the Bouchard Restaurant & Inn website.

(3/26/13) The touring company production of Mary Poppins is winding down so be sure to get tickets if it’s coming to your area to see Karen Murphy as she plays two roles in this really fun musical. Recently, a Madison WI paper reviewed the show and stated that “...Picking a favorite performer is easier: That’d be Karen Murphy as Miss Andrew, Mary Poppins’ dour rival... Watching Miss Andrew disappear from the plot in a hellish green haze was my only regret of the night.” Click here for the full review.

Classmates who have had the opportunity to see the show have all been impressed. It is currently finishing shows in Dallas this week and then on to Atlanta next week. You can get more information on other tour cities and ticket information on the Mary Poppins website. Don’t forget to alert Karen if you will be attending any of these remaining performances so that she can say HI after the show.

(3/26/13) Many of you will remember our school district superintendent, Dr. William French, who passed on November 20, 2012. He served the New Canaan school system for 22 years from 1967-1989 and was much esteemed in the field of educational administration in many of the area public school systems where he was asked to serve as an interim superintendent after retiring from the New Canaan schools.

We also lost Mrs. Joan Ballots on December 6, 2012. She put the ladies through their gym “paces” in junior high and taught in New Canaan for 35 years.

(11/4/12) Karen Murphy is now “on the road” and possibly coming to a town near you in the touring company production of Mary Poppins. She plays two roles in this musical...the “Feed The Birds” old woman, and the Barnes children’s “evil” nanny (from the book, not the movie). Currently playing in Oklahoma City and then Tulsa next week, the production comes back east to Montreal, Norfolk (VA), and then Hershey (PA). You can get more information on other tour cities and ticket information on the Mary Poppins website. (7/30/12) Sam Duncan will be riding this August in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC) 2-day bike-a-thon event to raise awareness and support cancer research. This year, Sam is riding in memory of his mother-in-law, our fellow classmate, Walter McArthur, and a neighbor, all who died recently of cancer as well as many others in his life who have passed due to this disease. The PMC will be held August 4-5 and benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Sam has been making this ride for many years now and hopes that you will be able to support this worthy charity’s research against a disease that is claiming far too many of us way to young. You can make a donation towards his ride goal by visiting his rider page at Sam Duncan PMC Rider Page.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of our classmate, Wendy L. Russell Peroni, on July 17, 2012, as she lost her 10+ year battle with multiple forms of cancer. Despite great pain and many setbacks along the way, Wendy pushed through it all to continue pursuing the things in her life that mattered most. An obituary notice link can be found on the In Memoriam page. A service celebrating Wendy’s life will be held on August 4, 2012, in Jupiter, FL.

Condolences go out to Susan Morrow Winstead on the death of her father, John, on July 10, 2012.
